A reader emailed me to say that she just listed her 1896 home which is actually the gatehouse of the Macy family estate in Briarcliff Manor, New York.
The main Macy house is called The Chilmark Estate. It was also built in 1896 for V. Everit Macy – an American industrialist and philanthropist – and remains a private residence today. Both the gatehouse and the main residence were designed in the Tudor Revival style. The gatehouse sits beyond the entry gate and is across the street from Brooke Astor’s former mansion.
Gatehouses originated in the time of early antiquity and were necessary to protect the main entrances to castles and towns. Over the centuries, gatehouses became more of a front piece for the estate, rather than an actual defensive structure.
Owning a gatehouse that has been separated from the original estate is an affordable way to enjoy a stately home without the massive upkeep (and expense) of a larger estate. They’re like mini mansions.
This particular one has the mini-mansion price of $675,000. This tid-bit sized estate has 2 bed, 2 bathrooms in 1,860 square feet.
3 Holbrook Road is furnished with period antiques.
The seller writes:
It has been a labor of love. It’s walls have been painted by a master faux artist in NYC who has worked on most major theaters, hotels and museums in NYC.
I am looking for that special person or couple that appreciates historical houses and furnishings. I would consider selling some of the furnishings as well to a person with similar taste.
Some of the fine features cited in the listing description: Vaulted ceiling treatments. Tudor bay windows. Gilded era dining room. Wood burning fireplace library. Walled garden, old foot paths winding through out property. Cobblestone patios, mahogany deck, matching Tudor garage.
The updated kitchen has a vintage feel:
But the bathrooms are my favorite part:
You can feel like American royalty in the loo!
