I came across this non-profit organization just recently, and I can’t believe I had never heard of it before! The concept is near and dear to my heart, having worked at different women’s shelters in Colorado & Canada.
One thing I can vouch for is that women’s shelters, and homeless shelters in general, are often underfunded and subsequently, lacking in aesthetic appeal. Sure, they provide the basic necessities (food, clothes, bed and shared bathrooms) but the institutional nature of them can be, at times, dehumanizing and downright depressing.
The rooms are tiny and often 2, 4 or 6 beds are crammed into one room with little space for personal belongings. The transient and crowded nature of shelters inadvertantly encourages a lack of regard for the physical environment.
Enter the non-profit Enchanted Makeovers…
Our mission is to transform these environments into places that inspire behavioral and psychological change and are supportive to those re-building their lives.
Essentially, Enchanted Makeovers provides cottage-inspired, personal makeovers of rooms in women & children’s shelters in an effort to give the residents a pride of space – something to be proud of, to take care of and, a place to feel safe. A sanctuary amidst the chaos of a traumatic period in life.
Look at some of these before and afters from the Enchanted Makeovers website:
A lot of the items used in the makeovers are hand-made and the volunteers try to involve the residents and their children in the process as much as possible.
Love the porch-light additions and the “screen doors” – very cute! And who doesn’t want to cozy up in a cute little cottage?
This is amazing…
They have created such imaginative, safe, inspiring spaces for people who have often never known home as a “safe” place.
Kudos to Enchanted Makeovers for transforming homeless shelters into homeful shelters.
