House Crazy turns one year old!

Today marks my blog’s first anniversary – which is actually like 5 years in Internet time. :)

On January 8th, one year ago, I just up and started this blog on a whim – no pre-planning, no research, NO clue what I was doing.

And it has been dandy bringing this blog to you over the past year. I have learned a lot (A LOT) and have made many new blogging friends. [One interesting thing I learned this year: "blog" is short for web-log!]

I have also faced a heckuva lot of technical problems – everything from bandwidth limitations to web hosting emergencies. Blogging is not for the faint of heart. No, it is for the glutton-for-punishment personality types – long hours sitting in front of a computer, little pay, late nights of tedious photo sizing & technical crap, oodles of expenses (did I mention little pay)… But here we are one year later – and one year smarter.

You know that I’m crazy about houses, and I always try to bring something personal to my house posts, but I thought I would do a get-to-know-me-better post for kicks.

House Crazy

So here are some fun facts you probably didn’t know about House Crazy Sarah (the one and only author of this blog):

~  I’m actually half French Canadian, although I don’t speak French – the other half of me is English Canadian

~ At one point in my checkered past, I worked as a forest fire resource technician

~ At another point in my checkered past, I taught childrens’ art lessons

~ Then there was that hiccup in time when I worked at a veterinarian’s office – mostly shoveling dog poop

~ My nicknames in highschool were: Skittles, Blondie, Burnsy, and Side-Burnsy

~ I HATE cooking

~ My kids are half Mexican

~ My dog is 100% crazy (as evidenced by his irrational fear of MICROWAVES)

~ Surprising fact: I’ve never NOT been blond

~ unsurprising fact: I adore John Denver and Canadian folk music

~ weird fact: my sister is ambidextrous and double-jointed (she can pop out her elbows backwards) she also once had a job as an animal carcass “disarticulator”, now she is a physical therapist - true story!

~ my first “house” (of which I was half legal owner) was actually a condominium in Denver

~ there is a very rare genetic disease that runs in my family; I have a 50% chance of inheriting it  :(

~ I am horrifically afraid of snakes

~ I’m night-blind, somewhat face blind, and have a terrible memory

~ But I can remember every HOUSE I’ve ever been in

~ I failed grade 9 typing and to this day I cannot type without looking at the keyboard

~ But I managed to somehow write 2 novels

~ I have a rare learning disability which severely limits my ability to do any type of math

~ But I won a prestigious scholarship in graduate school

~ I hardly ever watch HGTV (shocking right?) I prefer to read shelter mags and watch the news on TV

~ I can’t eat squash or fish (both make me retch)

~ When I was a baby I floated in the bathtub - thanks to my ample der·ri·ère

~ If I was a house I would probably be … a dumpy old (but colorful) stone cottage

Congratulation’s on your 1st Anniversary of your Blog….. I really enjoy your blog for many reasons…. the first one that attracted be to your blog is that you are Canadian …as so am I…but I live in Canada in the middle of nowhere Ontario. Any way the houses you find are interesting and of course the main thing that keeps me here is your writing.
    Hello from Canada

  • Penny says:

Happy Blog BIrthday Sarah! I love your blog and I also love houses. If I was a house I’d be a cottage by the sea with a wrap around deck. Something about me , lets see, I always wanted to write a book, but I have this precondition to be overly concerned about my loved ones to the point of distraction. Thus depression kicks in from time to time. Another thing is I don’t tend to be able to stay on track with things. Work in progress. That is life, always a work in progress. I enjoy almost anything artsy and tend to have to many hobbies. Thus the distraction….where was I going with this…LOL. Keep up the good work Sarah. Look forward to seeing you this summer. Hugsss

Thank Penny! Being a parent is so distracting from eveything else – I feel your pain! I often feel like I am neglecting the heck out of my kids because I focus so much time on this blog!

Well lets see…I had the pleasure of giving birth to housecrazy Sarah. AND she hates it when I say this, but the greatest highs in my life were when I gave birth to my three children. By the way, housecrazy came out into the world just a screaming. But she turned out to be a quiet child, who at a very early age(3 years old) started expressing herself through art and the written word. Congratulations on your first anniversary, my daughter, I know how hard you work on this blog! Now, let’s see, I love cooking, and HGTV, have never been blond, hate watching the news… but know you are my child,( no mix up in the nursery) because you are the spitting image of your dad! After much thought, I have decided that I would be a church, a very old church….not one of these modern constructions! love you

Hi. I did not do an anniversary post, maybe I will as it is a year for me now too. I also am not good at Math and don’t like to cook, but I do like to bake. I am hyper-afraid of spiders and bees. I flunked typing the first round in HS and took it again and got an A+. So we are kinda the same in some ways.
    If I were a house I would be……. a beach house.
Of course, as always, I love your blog.

  • Marie says:

Congratulations Sarah….it seems longer than a year!! So many fun and interesting houses you have managed to find. Keep up the great work!!
I have always been a blonde, naturally, and even though my hair is darker now, I still say its BLONDE!!
If I were a house…..hmmmm…..I’d like to be one of those huge old country places in England, because they are so interesting to explore!

  • Aunty Lynn says:

Bonjour, I am the French connection, eh.
Congratulations Sarah. Although I don’t offer my two cents very often, I do follow your blog. Your lack of math and typing skills is inherited, I am sad to say.
If I were a house you would consider me an old Victorian lady.

  • Karen says:

I’ve enjoyed reading your blog for a little while now and love all the interesting ones you find, plus enjoy your writing. I’ve always loved houses which is good as my husband and I have lived in eleven since we were married! (and we’re not military either:) Hope you’ll find more fun and enjoyment in blogging about houses for your second year!

  • Mary says:

Congratulations! Your site has become one of my *dailies* . When my daughter was little I dragged her around to every open house I could find! I used to think it was maybe because I’m nosy…but no, I just love looking at houses!

Your comments are always great along with the houses you feature.

hmm, If I were a house, I’d have a split personality. Sometimes I love sleek, modern, and minimal. But, I also like cute and cozy. Maybe cute and cozy on the outside and modern on the inside. Talk about indecisive. teehee

    Keep having fun!
