Normally, people do not live with wild animals, no matter how small. But back 2014, one man saved a squirrel from certain death. The squirrel unexpectedly became a pal, a member of his family, and a trusted friend. This is proof positive that sometimes, unusual bonds between humans and animals can form.
13. Animal Lover
Allen Pursley is an animal lover from Lewisville, Texas. He and his husband already had two dogs and a cat. They never expected to have a squirrel living in the house, but that is what happened. After a day of work as a cycling instructor, Allen came home to relax. But there was a strange houseguest waiting for him.
12. Saving a Squirrel
A baby squirrel was on his doorstep. How did it get there? Apparently someone was walking by when they noticed a baby squirrel fall from a nest in a nearby tree. The person was unable to get the squirrel back into the nest. Allen’s then-husband worked at a vet and he started caring for the squirrel, eventually bringing it home to oversee its rehab.
11. Forming a Bond
Allen didn’t think he would ever fall for a squirrel but he was in for a shock. As he started helping nurse the squirrel back to health, they formed a bond. The two dogs were more than a little jealous. They were curious about their new guest, however. They soon decided he should have a name.
10. Famous Squirrel Name
They chose the name Rocky, after the cartoon Rocky and Bullwinkle. Over time, Allen made up many new nicknames for Rocky, such as Squirrelito, Sweet Squirrel, and Squiggidy-Boo. As their bond grew, Allen took plenty of pictures of his squirrel to post to social media.
9. Climbing the Walls
Rocky was still a wild animal and he got pretty crazy at times, climbing up to places that were off-limits to the dogs and cat, like the drapes and countertop. Allen decided to create a special squirrel-proof closet that was just Ricky’s room.
8. Part of the Family
Of course Allen never intended to keep a wild squirrel. He knew that when he was no longer a baby and was healthy enough, he had to return to the wild. But when that day came, Rocky did not want to live outside. He had become accustomed to the finer things – well, the human things – in life. So he became a member of the family.
7. Special House
Allen loved having Rocky as a pet. He set about teaching him tricks and making more special places for him in the home. He even made him his own special Squirrel House to sleep in. Rocky still enjoys hanging out with Allen though, even though he won’t let anyone else pick him up.
6. Many Friends
Rocky is tamer than an average squirrel and Allen says he acts more like a cat. Rocky even uses the litter box. That makes things pretty easy on a household with many pets. Rocky isn’t totally domesticated. He has some outside friends who come and visit him.
5. Outdoor Shelter
Allen made Rocky a special outdoor shelter where he can socialize with his friends and then come inside when he is done. Allen has gotten a lot of notoriety for Rocky. His friends love the squirrel, and one even made a special portrait for Rocky.
4. Fourth Birthday
Rocky has a unique personality who has become a social media star. Posts like this one about his fourth birthday attract plenty of attention. He seems to be a carefree soul who likes to have fun and enjoys a bit of adventure. Provided he can sleep inside!
3. Video Star
Videos of Rocky collect hundreds of views the day they are posted. This one shows Rock on what is a special day for him – Thursday cuddles with daddy! He lazes on Allen’s lap exactly like a cat would, enjoying pets, rest and relaxation. What a great parent he has – no wonder the dogs are jealous.
2. It Must Be Love
Allen says Rocky loves him so much that when he goes away for a few days on a trip, Rocky usually holds a grudge. who hasn’t had an animal who is torn between being mad at you and being so happy to see you when you get back home? After this most recent trip, Rocky was just happy to see him!
1. Happy Holidays
Rocky gets to enjoy everything with his family, including the holidays. He even appears on carved pumpkins every season. Allen and Rocky are living their happily ever after. Although no one advocates for turning squirrels into pets, for a domesticated squirrel, this is the best situation possible.
