The village of Geithoorn is located in the Netherlands and has a year-round population of 2,500. But there are seriously no roads – only footpaths and meandering canals punctuated with the quaintest thatched roof cottages on the planet.

The residents of Giethoorn use canoes, kayaks or silent motor boats to move around the narrow canals. There are no loud, obnoxious motor boats permitted.

This Netherlands hamlet is located in the Overijssel province. Giethoorn was founded in 1230 AD by fugitives who had escaped from the Mediterranean. It was originally a nature reserve so that helped to keep the area untouched by modern development.

There are also about 180 foot bridges connecting the little islands on which the homes are situated.

The residents take great pride in their history and unique setting and each home is meticulously well-maintained.

They do get snow here in the wintertime. In fact, the canals often freeze over.

The locals have adapted, however, by using ice skates to get around in the frozen months.
