The Kreischer Mansion is a real live haunted house. Complete with Victorian era tragedy, and for good measure, a gruesome murder within the past decade.

It has been for sale for years,  but nobody wants to touch it. At least nobody wants to BUY it; plenty of haunted house enthusiasts want to visit it.

Located on the aptly named Arthur Kill Road in Staten Island, New York, this dear old mansion has intrigued since the day its last square-head nail was hammered in 1885.

The ornate Victorian home was built by a wealthy 19th-century brick manufacturer named Balthasar Kreischer as one of two side-by-side mansions for his two sons.

The son who inherited his father’s business – Edward Kreischer – was not much of a businessman and the family business quickly fell into decline. Distraught and going broke, Edward shot himself in the head inside the mansion his father built for him.

The house has long been rumored to be haunted by Edward’s grieving widow.

Then, there was that incident in 2005.

The house had been converted into a restaurant in the 1990’s  but by 2005 the restaurant was closed and the house was guarded by caretaker Joseph Young. Young was not on the up-and-up and was reportedly paid $8,000 by the Bonanno crime family to brutally murder a Bonanno enemy on the grounds of the Kreischer Mansion.

Young initially attempted to strangle Robert McKelvey in the house, but the victim broke away and ran outside. Young caught up with McKelvey, stabbed him, and drowned him in a small pool in the yard. He then chopped the body into pieces with a hacksaw and made soup. Just kidding about the soup part. He actually burned the remains in the mansion’s furnace.

Young was subsequently convicted and sentenced to life in prison.

If all this macabre history weren’t self evident enough, the Kreischer Mansion is just inherently dark and creepy.

According to Zillow, the house has been for sale on and off for several years – most recently posted for sale at a whopping $12,000,000 in 2014.

The Kreischer Mansion measures in at over 6,000 square feet with 14 rooms – and a fireplace in almost every room.

Some of the original wallpaper is made of incised leather:

There’s something menacing about the decor…. I just can’t put my finger on it.

Creepy basement (furnace not pictured):

The crime scene investigators removed one of the steps to the basement as “evidence”… you can see that the middle step (below) has been replaced with a newer board.

Outside, the drowning pool:

This house seemed destined for tragedy from the get-go. I mean, look at it!

It’s even better at night:

People have long reported seeing a ghost-like female figure peering out from the windows – said to be the widow of the original owner. I don’t doubt there is also a ghost of the poor dude who met his end there, roaming the grounds at night.

Happy Halloween friends!
